This year 120 countries will see a milestone in Latin American music celebration. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) and the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (LARAS) will be presenting the 1st Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards on September 13, 2000. CBS will broadcast the awards show. This finally gives them a little leverage against the arguments that CBS has no commitment to Latinos on television. Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation, the nations largest Spanish-language radio network, will carry the awards on radio.
The categories and nominees are diverse, covering Latin-specific traditions as well as more mainstream forms. There are broad Tropical categories as well as Salsa and Merengue. The Mexican influenced categories include Ranchero, Banda, Tejano, and Norteņo. Other categories include several Brazilian forms, like Pagode and Sertaneja, as well as Jazz, Tango, Rock and children's music. One of the biggest promises this awards show offers is to introduce new forms, lesser known artists, and expand the awareness of the diversity and richness of Latin Music. It's also an excellent platform for Brazilian music to come out of the shadows of the rest of Latin America.
Leading the list of Latin Grammy nominees is songwriter and producer Emilio Estefan, husband to Gloria Estefan, with six nominations. One of the nominations was for directing Gloria's music video for No Me Dejes De Querer. Following with five nominations each are Marc Anthony and Shakira. Emilio will also be honored as the LARAS Person of the Year.
