The rubble was not so bad, although the smell and the subsequent discovery of dead and mutilated bodies, left a lot to be desired. The real problem however, was the threat of the Liberty Pl bldg that kept threatening to topple in on us. Yesterday the bldg lost a window, groaned and caused a stampede of workers.
I spoke to a young firefighter named Travis who came in from Kentucky. Everyone
wants to get their hands dirty one way or another, even if it just means helping
to clear rubble from the surrounding streets. Every where we went, people were
holding candles, flags or posters cheering us on, and pledging their support.
The last time I saw this was when our people were held hostage in Iran, and
during the Gulf War. Yesterday was a waste of time for me because they began
to use heavy crane equipment, and so we needed to clear the area. The hopes
of finding any survivors are getting slimmer and slimmer.
