I recall how as a child in a new school, the school bully decided to make me one of his prime targets. I feared this boy, and school became not a place of learning, but rather a living Hell. One day, I could take no more,and after being struck and pushed I reacted by landing a few punches to his face. After the initial anger was gone, I was once again scared, yet a fight after school had me on top of him, and although he bloodied my nose, he thought it best that we stop. In any event, because I stood up to him, he found a new respect for me, and the bullying stopped. This is what we are faced with today, but on a much larger scale. We need to react like that little boy that I was so many years ago. This is not an easy matter. As a humanitarian nation we are faced with a dilemma, we must hate war, yet we must not be afraid to wage it when the need arises. If we do not do so however, we will lose our basic freedoms and forever be held hostage by the whims of a few fanatical bullies.

I am sickened by this atrocity. ...I am weeping as I write these words. I am Rachael, in the desert crying for her children. I am Peter, weeping over the body of Jesus Christ. I have no words to describe the depth of the sorrow in my heart at this moment, not only for those thousands of people who were massacred yesterday, but for all of us.

We who love life must love ALL LIFE as a sacred prayer. We must make a stand for peace, and the voice of PEACE must be sounded throughout the world by each one of us, regardless of our race, color, or religion, or gender, or sexual orientation. We are not so different from each other as we lie dying, and our blood flows like rivers over America. We cannot, must not, bring about our own annihilation by killing others to salve our grief.

There are no quick fixes. We bomb Afghanistan, or Pakistan, or wherever. They will retaliate. More lives will be lost. Countless innocents will die. This is what war really is. Government powers may not fall, but mother and fathers and brothers and sisters and children will die. Not only here, but throughout the world as other countries take a stand, one way or another. We are on the brink of self-destruction. I call upon you in this forum to stand beside me for the sake of PEACE.
