On January 13th, El Salvador suffered from an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale. There have been almost one thousand aftershocks since then. The Government of El Salvador and 10-10-123/AMERICATEL have provided a toll-free phone number for Salvadorans in the United States who would like to contact family. The number is 1-800-914-2835. It is available Monday-Friday 7:00am - 11:00pm CST and Saturday-Sunday 8:00am - 4:00pm CST. When you call, give your name and phone number in the United States then the name and phone number of the person you would like to reach in El Salvador. The operator will contact your relatives and will inform you of their situation as well as provide them with your phone number.
The Government has also warned that any Salvadoran citizens in the US should talk with a lawyer or INS before visiting El Salvador. Non-citizens who leave the country often jeopardize their status.
Beyond the immediate devastation, rebuilding and assistance needs to happen as soon as possible. The agencies in El Salvador providing care and assistance have asked for monetary donations. In these conditions, it is very easy an epidemic to take hold and spread rapidly.
LULAC has started an El Salvador Rescue Fund. Donations can be sent to LULAC Institute - El Salvador Rescue Fund, 201 E. Main, Ste. 605, El Paso, TX 79901. This initiative is in cooperation with American Red Cross. To donate directly to Red Cross, call 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish) or 1-800-HELP-NOW.

The Government of El Salvador has also designated specific accounts to receive funds for assistance. The use of all funds transferred to the accounts below, will be audited by PriceWaterHouseCoopers to assure that they are used properly. The goods that will be purchased are available in El Salvador.
