Preparation:
Add all other ingredients and bring to a boil; reduce heat and LOW SIMMER 3 hours or longer.
Add HOT water if necessary; remove ham hocks; give your favorite cat or dog the bones.
Break up the meat and return it to the soup; add cabbage and simmer for an additional 30 minutes.
Serve with thick slices of Portuguese Sweet Bread and butter.
You can die now; you're in heaven!

Here is a delicious soup that was served for years at the open house heralding the beginning of Hawaii's legislative season. It's real kine (local) ono kaukau (good food)!
Note: If Miko sausage is not available, substitute one pound of Polish kielbasa and one tablespoon Tabasco sauce.
Cut kielbasa into 1/4-inch rings and cut rings in half.

1 pound dry kidney beans
2 pounds ham hocks -- (2 to 3)
2 large garlic cloves -- minced
1 tablespoon salt
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
5 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 large Maui onion -- diced
4 medium potatoes -- cut in small cubes
4 large carrots -- sliced
1 large Miko (HOT) Portuguese sausage -- see note below
1 can tomato sauce -- (8 oz)
1 small Maui head of cabbage - (green) -- chopped
Soak beans overnight; drain; place beans in large soup pot and cover with water.
