¿Qué es patria? ¿Sabes acaso
lo que preguntasm mi amor?
What is a homeland? Do you know
my love, what you are asking?
- Salomé Ureña -

Several years ago Julia Alvarez presented a human portrayal of three sisters who became martyrs of the Dominican Republic in "In the Time of the Butterflies". This time she weaves the tale of the national poet of the Dominican Republic, Salomé Ureña.

The story spans a century and covers the lives of two women between three nations. Camila Henríquez Ureña, daughter to Salomé, finds herself retiring from teaching while being asked to memorialize her mother.
