Reviews - Movies

The 12th Annual Cine Las Americas International Film Festival starts this Wednesday with a showing of "All Inclusive," a movie directed by Rodrigo Ortúzar Lynch about a Chilean-Mexican family on vacation in the Mayan Riviera.  Cine Las Americas is a film festival and competition that brings films and filmmakers of Latin America and other parts of the world to Austin for one week in the spring.  Chile is the guest country this year and there will be several screenings highlighting the country's films.

The selection of films includes more than 100 movies.  There are several new releases, documentaries, feature length and short films.  The movies range in genres from horror to comedy and a showcase of animation films.  All films not in English are subtitled.

Cine Las Americas also hosts Emergencia, the film competition devoted to filmmakers 19 years of age or younger. The jury is comprised of students from LBJ High School in North East Austin, who reviewed all entries and decided on which films to program in the showcase, and will also decide who the winners of the competition are.  Screenings for those films are held at the Mexican American Cultural Center on Thursday April 23, 4 to 6 PM.

The festival will run from Wednesday, April 22nd to Thursday, April 30th ending with the closing film Arráncame La Vida (Tear This Heart Out).  That film, directed by Roberto Sneider, stars Ana Claudia Talancón as a young woman searching for freedom and identity in post-revolutionary Mexico.

Film passes are $70 for access to all movies, access to after parties with some of the filmmakers and other special events.  Individual tickets are also available for each movie.  The Mexican American Cultural Center in Austin will also host more than 20 free films as part of the festival.
